At 10:00 a.m. D and I with Mohammed Tammam proceeded to clear southeast corner of lower pit.
Having treated the fibers and organic matter with celluloid dissolved in amyl acetate and acetone (Lucas' prescription). as an experiment, for the stuff is too fragmentary and decayed to be of any use. We proceeded to examine the treated substances. The result was better than I expected and we were able to remove fragments to the tray.

No. 72: Seems to be decayed fibrous wood. One fragment seemed to consist of bundles of twisted fibers but may also have been wood. (A piece from the top of the chunk of charcoal, No. 68) was certainly decayed wood.
No. 73: Was a fragment of gold leaf fallen from the canopy cover which is on top of the coffin. Where it lies intact on the coffin [ILLUSTRATION]. The shaded parts are filled with strips of glazed paste (red, yellow, green). Another larger fragment hangs over the edge of the pit in the southeast corner and smaller bits including inlays were found under No. 81 (q.v.).
No. 74: On a potsherd, decayed wood with a fragment of brown fabric lying over the wood fibers. Lifted potsherd with greater part of wood and fabric. The latter appears to be a sort of fringe.
